The renovation of this waterfront home demonstrates the marked impact of modest alterations. This 1980’s shingle home was lacking the drama of its oceanside setting and historic character of New England shingle style homes. A series of gable additions dramatically improve the interior and exterior of the home with minimal impact to the building’s footprint. The team retrofitted a steel frame in the vaulted family room, providing much needed support against variable ocean winds and opening up stunning ocean vistas. The modest size of these additions may have been driven by a compact and sensitive site, but their impact was made possible by lessons learned at all scales. The thoughtful design of this renovation has been recognized by Hanley Wood’s Remodeling Design Awards, BRAGB’s Prism Awards, and the Dream Home Awards.
